Egremni Beach an Exotic Escape from Reality

Egremni beach (Greek: Εγκρεμνή or Εγκρεμνοί) is located in the south-west part of Lefkada Island, about 30 km of Lefkada Town, the capital of the island. It is considered as one of the most beautiful beaches on the island and in Mediterranean as well. This beach is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Greece and in Europe as a whole. It is famous for remarkably blue and clear waters and long sandy beach. Egremni beach is of the longest beaches on Lefkada, stretching for more than 2.5 km. Similar to Porto Katsiki beach, Egremni is surrounded by cliffs and as a consequence, not so easy accessible. The nearest village is Athani village, located a few kilometers in the north.
How to Reach Egremni Beach
You can drive to the beach with your own car or you can rent a car in one of the numerous rent-a-car agencies on the island. But take into account that you won’t be able to drive all the way to Egremni beach. After Athani village it’s more a pathway then a road, so when the road ends you must park the car and walk down 347 steep steps down to the rocky cliff some 150m high. But, the result will be worth the effort!
The waters of Egremni beach are turquoise blue and clear and offer one of the best settings for swimming in Europe. The sunset on the beach is simply breathtaking. The beach is composed of white sand characteristic for Ionian Islands and fine pebbles very comfortable to lie on and relax under the sun. You can also enjoy in the sailing or body boarding and even surfing. Egremni beach is an idyllic place for nature-lovers in search of silence and paradise beauty due to its isolation and the quite a difficult access by the vertical stairs.
Beach Services and Equipment
There are a couple of beach bars as well as sunbeds and sun umbrellas for rent on the beach. You’ll have to bring own gear and equipment There is no equipment for water activities provided on the beach, so you’ll have to bring your own with you.
There aren’t lifeguards on duty on Egremni beach, so you should be careful when involving in water activities, especially if you are with children, because the waves on this beach can be pretty intense. In case you come with small children, take care to bring all needed safety equipment for swimming and don’t leave them unattended.
In case you want to be close to Egremni beach during your holiday on Lefkada Island, you can book holiday apartment, villa or studio in nearby village Athani, a quiet place with taverns and wonderful picturesque views of the surrounding area.
Due to its length, Egremni beach usually doesn’t get crowded as its neighbor, a popular Porto Katsiki beach, but it is strongly recommended to arrive to the beach during the early morning hours, to avoid congestion on the narrow island’s roads.
